MSA VAAI Setup

If you want to benefit from VAAI, you need a actual Firmware Revision and make your ESXi aware, you’re using a P2000 Storage that is able to talk with him.

Newer / Modern Storage devices also like the actual MSA 2040 Storage are automatically recognized by a ESXi Server and tested for VAAI compatibility. P2000 was not able to communicate with VAAI, but HP has now built in that code into latest firmware revisions – VMware didn’t.

Here’s a quick guide how to enable ESXi to recognize P2000 as a VAAI device.

Setup

  • Download the VAAI files for ESX here at HP.com or from my Dropbox folder here
  • Upload File “hp_vaaip_p2000_offline-bundle-210.zip” to vmfs datastore
  • Connect to host using ssh
  • mv /vmfs/volumes/[uploadvolume]/hp_vaaip_p2000_offline-bundle-210.zip /var/log/vmware

The path /var/log/vmware is hard coded in the zip file, you must use this path…

  • cd /var/log/vmware
  • esxcli storage core claimrule list -c VAAI

  • esxcli software vib install -d hp_vaaip_p2000_offline-bundle-210.zip

  • esxcli storage core claimrule list -c VAAI
